POSTPARTUM BEGINS AFTER BIRTH, THIS IS THE TIME TO BEGIN YOUR GENTLE RECOVERY...
NOT AT 6 WEEKS.
Before 6 weeks, moms are lifting, carrying or even walking around with their baby. This takes core, this takes effort, this is why waiting 6 weeks to begin recovery is bogus! This isn't about starting a tedious exercise routine immediately, but it is about becoming aware of your body's posture, movement habits and connection to mind.
P.S. let's release the narrative that all bodies are healed and ready for the same thing by 6 weeks postpartum (or even 5 months or 2 years).
BEGIN WHERE YOU ARE. You don't have to be the postpartum mom on the TV show that looks like she was never pregnant by 3 weeks postpartum. I sure as hell wasn't! Or the mom that is scared to do a plank for a year worrying her diastasis is going to "get worse."
I'M DR. ASHLEY! AND 11 YEARS AGO I WAS . . .
I'm a mom of 2 spirited girls, yoga student/teacher and doctor of physical therapy.
Frustrated by my own challenging postpartum experiences, a spark was light inside me creating a desire to support other moms in their journeys. This is when I went all in and specialized in pelvic health for pregnancy and postpartum.
My episiotomy/perineal tear during my first birth set me back from where I thought I was supposed to be at a given time (according to the "healed by 6 week" narrative.) On top of that, my belly was soft, fluffy and weak and I didn't know where to begin!
I BEGAN SEARCHING FOR SOME KIND OF MANUAL (or any resources) OF HOW TO CARE FOR MY BODY. I never found one.
It's as if I was in the woods, I knew the destination, but my gps system was just spinning, stuck in rerouting. I had to find my way out without a map... I created my own path and now I'm blessed to share it with others!
Supporting postpartum moms from week 0 and beyond. It's like having a pelvic PT in your pocket.
Welcome to an educational series with simple exercises and strategies that offer support and guidance postpartum!
